Direction
I was inspired to design cover art for some of my favorite musical albums, beginning with Silo by The Altogether. I’m aiming to evoke the nostalgia and tension in the album’s lyrics, with a visual style influenced by the American Arts and Crafts Movement and cut paper art for a homey feeling.
I continued building on this style with Footnotes for the Spring by Eliza Rickman. I’m exploring layering and texture using geometric building blocks to create more complex shapes.

I used geometric shapes to create this falling bird, then warped it to achieve a more fluid form.

Reevaluation
At this point in my process, I came up against a wall– I wasn’t satisfied with the form of the bird or the layouts I was working with. So I returned to my thumbnail sketches and began developing a different layout.
For the new design, I learned a new method of adding grain texture and shading to shapes in Illustrator, and created a herringbone pattern for the background to evoke a tactile wool or scrapbook paper sensation. It was also important to me that I keep the bird motif, since Rickman references different types of birds in many of the songs on this album and they are a central metaphor.
